Car Activities

Mommy... are we there yet?

We've all heard it before.

Here are some fun games we've collected over the years.
No paper, no cards, no little pieces.
No beep-beep-ping coming from the back seat.
...and after all, the reason you are going on this family outing is to get the kids away from the tube!

The ABC Game

This game allows the children to keep their eyes peeled and watch everything outside. The goal is to find a word outside the car for each letter from A to Z. The first child to get through the whole alphabet is the winner. For example, if you see 'Arnies', and then 'Baskin Robbins', and then, 'Exit 45: Oklahoma City', that would qualify for A, B and C. The word has to begin with the letter. This game is not ideal to play on a long highway without any signs.

Ghost

In this game the goal is not to complete spelling a word. A word is a minimum of 3 letters, and may not be a proper noun. For example: player 1 says 'B'. Player 2 say 'A'. Player 3 says 'T'. Player 3 is out because he spelled 'BAT'. If a player is bluffing, you can challenge him. If that player cannot come up with a legitimate word, then he is out. For example,'Player1 says 'B'. Player 2 says 'A'. Player 3 says 'O'. Player 3 is challenged. He is out because there are no words that begin with 'BAO'. Each player gets 5 outs until he is disqualified from the game. The 5 outs spell G-H-O-S-T.

21 Questions

This game is suitable for younger children. You think of a person, and then then child has to guess who you are thinking of. The child may ask up to 21 yes/no questions. For example: 'Is the person a man?' Yes. 'Does the person live in this country? 'Yes'. The child keeps asking questions until he guess who the mystery person is.

Geography

One child starts off naming any geographic location. The next child must name another location which begins with the letter that the previous word ended. For example: The first child says: ;New York'. The next child say 'Kansas'. The next child says 'Sacramento'. A player may not repeat a location which was previously said. Sometimes we play "No A's." This is because there are so many countries that begin and end with A, that it can go on and on and get pretty annoying.
